Work Delay

2009 September 8

Friday afternoon triggered a series of events that will delay the release of new work and coffee book. That Afternoon, I was spending lunch with my friend Nat at Stone Werks Cafe (at the Quarry) when my car was broken into in the back parking lot. My laptop bag was the only item stolen which had homework, photography notes and book, and my laptop. While I was waiting for a glass repair guy to fix my window, I was talking to the manger and, to my surprize, there have been  a lot of breakens at that location and all laptops. The lot owner has yet to put up cameras in the parking lot, and the Quarry only has one sectary patrol for the whole area (a note of warning).

I’ve been working/ training with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society South Texas Chaper to do a coffee table book for donation. Now, I will continue doing photography (film) until I replace my stolen laptop. My hope is to replace all software and hareware by late October to stay on track. Thanks everyone for your support. This is only a small bump in the road.

Bokeh

2009 April 9

Bokeh is a Japanese word meaning  blurred or fizzy.  As a photographic term it means out of focused images formed from shallow depth of field. The last few months I’ve been doing some research about bokeh and how it works. Its basically just changing the shape of the largest aperture to get images in a shallow depth. I did some test shots to really see how it would work:

boken-test-3 boken-test-2

Around the month of February I measured one of my lens, and wait out looking for mini craft punchers that fit my needs. One of those was a heart puncher. When I made my bokeh, I used a red paper and not a neural or black paper, so there was some colour bleed into the image. This was however, corrected by custom WB, kind of. I mounted the boken on an old UV filter and taped it on. A better mounting opinnion would be to use something with a turning ring. Here is the test image:

Below are two final images from the Botanical Garden. There is also a bokeh wallpaper in the wallpaper section. In the coming months I hope to do more bokeh style images.

A Series of Fire

2009 February 17

Answers.com defines fire as a rapid, persistent chemical change that releases heat and light and is accompanied by flame, especially the exothermic oxidation of a combustible substance. Plus fire looks pretty. If you are a pyrotechnic, fire is your best friend and a hazard if you stop to stair at that flames. Fire cooks our food and warms us on a cold winter’s night. Fire is also really great to photograph. No candles or houses where harmed in these photos.
